The class of 2020: Brilliant and Resilient

It’s been a period of mixed emotions as hundreds of thousands of 2020 matriculants received their results yesterday. The class of 2020 wrote their final year exams under a considerable amount of strain. The challenges of online learning exacerbated the inequalities within our education system. More than ever, psychosocial support was required by both learners and educators.

Through our various partnerships, we did our best to assist the schools in our Khulani Programme. Despite all the challenges faced, last year’s matric results showed us the determination and industriousness of our learners, and for that, we remain incredibly proud. From our Khulani Schools, we had the following pass rates:

  • Siyabonga Secondary School – 90.54%
  • Willow Crescent Secondary School – 90%
  • Eqinisweni Secondary School – 78.79%
  • New Nation School – 72.92%

We value the importance of equipping learners with information to be able to make the best and most appropriate decisions for their lives, which is why our partnership with Gradesmatch has proven valuable. Through this partnership we have assisted 86 learners to apply to tertiary institutions, thus completing 610 applications for different qualifications at several South African institutions of higher learning, including TVET colleges. On average, we have assisted each learner to apply to 4 institutions.

Assisting learners to transition is our priority because accessing higher learning opportunities comes with a myriad of challenges from lack of awareness of available career options and their entrance requirements to a lack of experience in using digital technologies for funding applications.

“Gradesmatch applied to university for me. I didn’t know where to start. They explained everything. I was even inspired by the success stories on their app. They motivated me so much.” – Bongiwe Mwelase, New Nation School matric 2020

Bongiwe is also a scholarship recipient, and she’ll be studying a BSc. Mathematics and Statistics degree at Wits University this year.

Well done once again to our 668 matric learners who wrote their final exam last year, we trust that you will continue to make us proud.
