“I never thought nursing was for someone like me.”
That’s what I kept telling myself before the Careers Expo. I always saw nurses as women—my aunt, the ladies at the clinic, the ones in the posters. No one ever said boys could be nurses, too. I thought if you were a boy, you had to be a doctor or do something with tools or computers.
But then I listened to the nurses who came to speak to us. Calm, kind, and confident. They spoke about saving lives, working in trauma units, comforting patients when they were scared, and being proud of the work they do every day… They said nursing isn’t just about caring—it’s about leading, thinking fast, and being strong when others can’t.
Something shifted in me that day. I realised I could do that too. I could be that for someone one day. I walked into the expo with one idea of who I could become—and walked out with a new possibility.
Nursing—an honourable, vital, and deeply skilled profession—has often been seen as “a woman’s job.” Young boys have grown up believing that to be a nurse meant being something they were not expected to be. This stereotype, rooted in both our colonial and cultural histories, has left many boys disengaged from careers that centre care, empathy, and healing—despite possessing all the qualities required to thrive in such roles.
But something remarkable happened at our recent Careers Expo.
When professional nurses—confident, passionate —stood in front of hundreds of learners to speak about their journey into nursing, they didn’t just educate. They disrupted the status quo of gendered career paths. They made it clear that being a nurse is not about gender; it’s about courage, compassion, and commitment to service. The boys in the room listened intently. They asked questions. And some of them walked away saying, “Maybe this is something I can do too.” That is the power of representation. In that moment, the nurses didn’t just change minds—they helped shape new dreams.

Each year, our Annual Careers Expos serve as more than just a day on the calendar—they are a living testament to what becomes possible when we believe in the potential of young people. This year, we were humbled and inspired to host a total of 686 Grade 9 learners across three Khulani Secondary Schools.
Those numbers are not just statistics, but bright-eyed students stepping into spaces that plant seeds of possibility. For many of them, it was the first time they heard a professional speak directly to them about pathways to medicine, law, ICT, the creative arts, and beyond. They were not just spectators—they were curious minds asking, “How do I get there?“
For these young learners, many of whom face difficult circumstances, the Careers Expo is a powerful reminder: You are allowed to dream. And not only dream—but to build those dreams with knowledge, support, and clarity.
Encouragingly, our gender-disaggregated data shows signs of positive change. Girls are expressing interest in ICT and engineering, and boys comfortably become curious about careers in nursing and creative arts. These shifts suggest that our intentional exposure to diverse role models is helping learners imagine futures beyond stereotypes. Both boys and girls are beginning to see themselves in all careers—not just those society has historically assigned to them.
To Our Careers Expo Exhibitors—You Are the Magic Behind It All
None of this would be possible without our incredible exhibitors—individuals and organizations who took the time to show up, share their journeys, and open up a world of careers to our learners. Your presence made it real. You helped a teenager who had never heard of urban planning understand their passion for design. You helped a girl who loves math discover actuarial science. You reminded every learner in the room that their future is worth investing in.

We are deeply thankful to you for allowing our learners to dream, believe, and see the impossible become tangible.
What’s Next: Take A Learner to Work
We don’t stop here. As we head into the third quarter, we look forward to our Take a Learner to Work Initiative—an immersive opportunity for learners to spend a day experiencing a real work environment. This is where dreams begin to take shape—when students no longer just hear about careers but begin to see themselves in those spaces.
The future isn’t something far away. For our learners, it begins here—with every word of encouragement, every story shared, and every door opened by a caring adult.
Thank you for being part of that journey.
